A 1-1 away draw at Hoffenheim last weekend extended Augsburg’s unbeaten run to 11 matches

Augsburg could take advantage of Bayern Munich’s busy schedule as they host the Bundesliga leaders in matchday 28 on Friday. This match at the WWK Arena between the eighth-placed Fuggerstadter and the top-placed Die Bayern comes with our prediction of both teams scoring goals.

Augsburg’s 39 points put them three points behind the top six, the last of the European qualification spots. Bayern have 65 points and carry a six-point lead over Leverkusen.

A 1-1 away draw at Hoffenheim last weekend extended Augsburg’s unbeaten run to 11 matches (W6, D5). Interestingly, that was the first goal they conceded in their last seven matches, underlining their impressive defensive record.

Three of those clean sheets came in a row at home, where Augsburg have two wins and two draws in their last four league matches. That may be put to the test by Bayern Munich, a side that defeated them 3-0 in the reverse fixture in November.

Bayern had to dig deep to defeat St. Pauli 3-2 last week, making it two wins and a draw in their last three matches. While they maintain a six-point lead at the top, the Bavarians have an upcoming Champions League game against Inter Milan to be worried about.

Their away form isn’t pristine, though, as Bayern drew two of their last three league trips.

Augsburg’s unbeaten run has made European football a genuine possibility for Jess Thorup’s side next season if they can maintain their recent momentum into the home stretch of the campaign. The hosts currently sit eighth-place in the table and have history of causing upsets on their own ground, so Bayern will need to be on their guard.

The last time that Augsburg tasted defeat was back in the DFB-Pokal quarter-final, they’ve since not lost in their last seven games. Following one-goal victories against Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg, they are coming off the back of a 1-1 draw away at Hoffenheim.

Bayern Munich are getting closer to regaining the Bundesliga title that they lost last season to Bayer Leverkusen. With only seven league games remaining and a current six-point lead over the champions (seven if you count their vastly superior goal difference), things are looking rosy for the Rekordmeister.

But boss Vincent Kompany won’t want his men to take their foot off the pedal and this represents a substantial test against a more than capable opponent. Focus must be high, especially with a Champions League quarter-final first leg awaiting them just a few days later.
