Milan have won their last two matches by the minimum margin

The Romans missed out on European competitions last season in a painful way: they lost out to Fiorentina for sixth place on additional criteria, both finishing on 65 points.

Maurizio Sarri, who returned to the coaching position in the summer, had a tough start, but from late September managed to put together an unbeaten run that was only ended by Inter. After a confident win over Lecce, Lazio faced Milan in the last round and failed to respond to Rafael Leão’s goal.

The San Siro giants last season managed only to win the Super Cup—right after Sergio Conceição replaced the underperforming Paulo Fonseca in winter. However, they could not build on that success, exiting the Champions League early, dropping to eighth in Serie A (after finishing second in 2024!), and finally losing the cup final to Bologna.

Now, Massimiliano Allegri is back at the helm. He started with a 1-2 loss to Cremonese at home, but by November had lifted his team to the top of the table. Still, there were many draws in October and November—including a long 2-0 win over Parma. On the other hand, they won the derby against Inter thanks to a single goal, and then repeated that against Lazio.

Cataldi and his teammates are just starting their cup campaign, while last season’s finalists have already eliminated two opponents. It was not difficult: 2-0 against Bari in August, and 3-0 against Lecce a month later.
